Remote Desktop Software Becoming a Priority for Many Americans

Remote access has become an indispensable technology for millions of people in the country, especially for those that connect to the internet through means other than a “traditional” desktop PC. The reasons as to why remote access tools have become so popular lately are many.

First of all, there is the increase in mobility when it comes to computing. Internet users are no longer tied to a desktop PC and can now access the internet from plenty of different web enabled devices such as laptops, netbooks, tablet PCs and smart phones. Other web enabled appliances such as internet ready television are rapidly gaining market share, thus fueling additional demand for various kinds of remote desktop software.

According to a recent survey conducted by Harris Interactive for a well known vendor of remote control software, 80% of respondents have stated that they enjoy having access to another person’s computer, thus letting them provide remote assistance with computer problems and to help them use various kinds of applications. Another popular use of PC remote access tools is the “virtual conferencing” capabilities that they offer, allowing users to communicate with others via webcam or text chat, while at the same time having the ability to share programs and files with each other. This is a feature that is used by many business users, according to information from a Tech Director poll, 78% of business managers believe that such remote access features are “useful” or “very useful” in the course of running their business activities. However, let’s not forget that it is not only business users that make up the market for remote control software. Many home users also use these tools to access files on their home computers from a mobile device, or to provide remote assistance to friends and family members.

Educational use of Remote Desktop Software is also growing very rapidly. Previously, remote desktop applications were very popular in school computer labs, allowing the instructor to remotely control student computers. While this is still a popular use of these programs, the increased use of the internet and the rise in distance learning has created new uses for them. Right now, there are thousands of educational institutions around the world which make use of customized remote access solutions. These applications allow students to remotely attend classes, as well as share information between other students and their instructors. Once again, remote access tools have evolved over the years in order to become a lot more useful, as well as more versatile to be useful in various different industries.
